In Portugal,

the baroque developed under the patronage o f King John V fascination with Italian architecture of the king a nd the wealth flowing from the colony in Brazil enabled the flowe ring of this style. John V was a supporter of delegation of archi tectural artists of Italian origin. Compounds of the court favored the Habsburg dynasty influenced architectural forms from the southern area of Germany and Austria. In 1717, on the order of John May, the architect Johann Friedrich Ludwig (born in Germany, a student of the Roman sculptor Andrea Pozza, in Portugal, known as Joao Frederico Ludovic) undertook the construction of the monastery-palace complex in Mafra, near Lisbon.
